Gerbera

I'm originally from a region where I can shelter under the canopy of trees and the temperature stays fairly mild. I prefer dappled or light shade and I have to be kept warmer than 6 celcius. If you need to wear a warm coat then it's too cold for me. Try me in a pot on a balcony or patio where you can enjoy my beautiful flowers.

It depends on the time of year. If I'm indoors during early in Spring then just a little drink once every week or two is fine. If I'm outside in a pot in the glorious British summer, then I would like a drink once or twice a week. If I'm in a border maybe a sprinkling once a week depending on the weather.

I'm not toxic...but with flowers this lovely why on earth would anyone want to eat me?

Nope! Here's the deal, I'm a warm weather plant and I'll shrink back when we get our first taste of wintry weather. My hardier relatives back home in South Africa are perennial and I will come back every summer there. However I am a hybrid and more tender. I will rot and die if I'm left in the cold (below 6 celcius) and wet. So really, from October onwards I'm getting worried! If you're lucky enough to have a bright frost-free spot you could bring me into a pot for the winter. But at the prices Mango charge, why not just enjoy me for the summer then buy another Gerbera next year? I won't hold it against you!

• Drive a car for up to 200 yards
• Make 1/2 small cup of tea
